What is Net Metering?
Solar net metering is a grid-connected billing mechanism that credits solar system owners for the electricity they add to the power grid. During sunny daytime hours when your solar panels generate more electricity than your home consumes, the excess power is automatically exported to the grid.
How the Bi-Directional Meter Works
Your conventional unidirectional electricity meter is replaced by a DISCOM-approved Bi-Directional Smart Meter. This meter measures two distinct energy flows:
- Import (kWh): Power drawn from the grid during nighttime or heavy monsoon days.
- Export (kWh): Surplus solar power sent into the grid during daytime.
Surplus Solar Unit Banking & Settlement
Your net monthly bill is calculated simply as: Billed Units = Import Units - Export Units. If you export more power than you consume in a given billing cycle, the surplus units are banked and carried forward to offset future bills.
